Abstract

Mass media audiences as the primary consumers of media products place a high premium on journalists’ adherence to the traditional journalism ethical values of accuracy, truth and objectivity which are generally regarded the bedrock of good journalism. News stories, the primary products of the media industry, attract the audience’s favourable attention only when the public (i.e., the audience) trusts the process of gathering, processing, and disseminating the products (i.e., news and information). Therefore, the media industry must thrive to earn the trust of the consumer by maintaining a high standard of ethical values. This study examines the audience’s perception of the media practitioners’ compliance with the ethical code of the journalistic profession in accomplishing their professional duties. The survey method is adopted for the study; Lagos State is chosen using a random sampling technique. The findings show that the majority of the respondents believed that news and information emanating from mass media organisations were considered credible and trustworthy. They were of the opinion that the activities of the media practitioners are in tandem with their professional ethical code. However, the majority of the audience expressed the view that journalists are corrupt as a result of their acceptance of “brown envelopes” and other forms of gratification. The audience also believed that most media organisations lacked editorial independence. We can therefore conclude that there is a serious ethical problem in the Nigerian media industry that needs to be addressed.
