From Fiction To Function: Translating Newspeak’s Ideological Intent In Dystopia Literature

Authors : Aderboub Nassima .

Abstract

This essay explores the ideological and linguistic challenges of translating Newspeak, the fictional language from Orwell's 1984, into Arabic. It argues that Newspeak is not just a set of invented terms but a tool of control designed to suppress thought and enforce obedience. Translation becomes a political and ethical act, not merely a linguistic task. Case studies show that Arabic renderings often lose Newspeak’s disturbing strangeness or ideological sharpness. The translator must choose between preserving Orwell’s critique or making the terms more accessible, revealing that translating Newspeak means preserving its power to disturb and warn.
