Abstract

The southern zone of the Zio River watershed is home to significant biodiversity, including the species Mitragyna inermis. Known for its ecological and pharmacological characteristics, it is of increasing importance in the socio-economic context of Togo. The objective of this study is to assess the state of Mitragyna inermis stands in order to understand the impact of anthropogenic pressure, particularly the high demand for wood energy, on their demographic structure and their regeneration capacity. It aims to analyze the demographic structure of Mitragyna inermis stands in terms of distribution of age and diameter classes in the study area, to establish the correlation between the different structural parameters. To achieve this, a floristic inventory was carried out and made it possible to identify a total of 120 species divided into 112 genera and 51 families in 36 plots measuring 30 mx 30 m. From the simple regression models the correlation between the diameter and the height, the diameter and the crown, the height and the crown of all the stands in Mitragyna is translated by linear functions which are respectively Y = 0.0328x + 5.1929 with R 2 = 0.041; Y = 0.0533x + 1.707 with R 2 = 0.13 and Y = 0.3434x + 0.8763 with R 2 = 0.14 allowed to bring out the best prediction model. The results of socio-economic surveys reveal that M. inermis provides a multitude of goods and services, including traditional medicine (70.08%), fodder (77.68%), firewood (91.37%), timber (84.52%) and crafts (57.64%). Habitat destruction (41%), overgrazing (17%), overexploitation of resources (26%) and changes in land use patterns (9%) are perceived as the main factors of degradation of these species. Despite the interest in the use of mitragyna inermis by the local population, the latter requires special attention for their protection as well as the habitats where they are found.
