The Pragmatic Context Between Deconstruction Strategy And Speech Act

Authors : Bensakhri Zoubeyr .

Abstract

With an emphasis on the idea of intentionality, this article examines the relationship between John Austin's Speech Act Theory (SAT) and Jacques Derrida's deconstruction theory of language and literature. It explores how both thinkers address the issues of context, meaning, and the speaker's or author's function. Derrida questions the idea of a stable, intended meaning, emphasizing the intrinsic instability of language and the iterability of signs, whereas Austin attempts to classify speech acts according to contextual appropriateness and traditional norms. The article investigates how each of them views meaning, performativity, and the constraints of context. It argues that Derrida's deconstructive interpretation of Austin highlights the importance of absence, supplementarity, and the "grafting" of meaning in the creation of discourse, exposing the aporias in SAT. .
