Abstrac: This article seeks to portray the "Iggāwen" (singers), a group that, before French colonization, was tied to the tribal social structure of Mauritanian (Bīḍhān) society. They served as guardians of oral memory by recounting epics and documenting tribal genealogies and values. Their status fluctuated between artistic elitism and classification as a professional class associated with cultural service. During the era of the Emirate system in the land of Shinqīt (Mauritania), the "Iggāwen" played significant political and cultural roles. Given the pivotal role of this group, this article attempts to answer several questions that clarify their status and functions within "Bīḍhānī" society. It also explores their origins, historical roots, and their relationship with the two aristocratic classes—the "Ḥassān" and the "Zawāya".
