This paper aims to explore the epistemological and Sharia-based foundations of the Islamic approach to sustainable development, presenting it as a comprehensive civilizational vision that integrates legal compliance with a Maqasid-oriented perspective. The findings demonstrate that Islam preceded all modern thought in addressing issues of sustainable development. As a sign of the completeness and precision of the Islamic worldview, it has laid down a set of principles and regulations that suffice humanity in managing life without undue hardship. As Allah says: ﴿ وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ فَصَّلْنَاهُ تَفْصِيلًا ﴾ (Surat Al-Isrā’, 17:12) Islamic thought has shown special care for environmental education and awareness, viewing them as vital elements of successful civilizational development—reflected in concepts such as Istikhlāf (stewardship) and ʿImārah (constructive inhabitation of the earth). The study further reveals that development in Islam is not confined to economic growth but encompasses social justice, protection of natural resources, and the safeguarding of human dignity for current and future generations. This approach emerges as a moral and practical alternative to prevailing materialist development paradigms.
