The Algerian Retirement System: Between Sustainability Issues And Reform Challenges

Abstract
The Algerian pension system, based on the pay-as-you-go principle, is an essential pillar of social protection in Algeria. However, like many countries, it faces major challenges that threaten its financial sustainability. This article analyses the main issues facing the system, including demographic pressures, economic constraints arising from the structure of the labor market and dependence on hydrocarbons. It examines the challenges associated with reform, highlighting the complexity of striking a balance between financial sustainability and preserving social benefits. The analysis is based on a literature review, an examination of the legal and regulatory frameworks, and an analysis of available data on the demographics and finances of the National des Retirement Fund (NRF). The article concludes with the need for a comprehensive and concerted approach to ensure the future of the Algerian pension system.
