This article explores the development of historical demography as a scholarly field situated at the intersection of statistical analysis and historical inquiry. It focuses on the study of past population structures through the family reconstitution method pioneered by Louis Henry. The article highlights the methodological significance of this discipline in reconstructing individual life trajectories based on parish records, genealogies, and population censuses. It also demonstrates how this approach contributed to uncovering patterns of fertility, marriage, and mortality in pre-industrial Europe. Furthermore, the article addresses the theoretical and methodological challenges faced by the field, particularly concerning the reliability of historical sources and the limitations of their temporal and geographical coverage
