This article, part of a broader research project on emerging media and new forms of mobilization within the Algerian diaspora, investigates the role of language in processes of subjectivation, power, and resistance in authoritarian contexts. It focuses on the digital uses of Darja, the Algerian vernacular dialect, during the 2019 Hirak movement and the COVID-19 health crisis. A historically marginalized language, Darja has acquired new visibility and political resonance in diasporic online spaces. Drawing on sociolinguistics, philosophy of language, and critical media studies, the analysis considers language as both a matrix of identity and a contested arena shaped by dynamics of domination and subversion.Methodologically, the study combines semi-structured interviews with diaspora members, discursive analysis of digital content in Darja, and the conceptual frameworks of self-mass communication (Castells, 2012) and digital polyphony. The findings suggest that digital platforms enable vernacular practices to circulate beyond national boundaries, transforming Darja into a medium of contestation and solidarity. Its online use contributes to the articulation of collective imaginaries, reinforces diasporic cohesion, and challenges established linguistic hierarchies. At the same time, these dynamics remain uneven, shaped by activist segments of the diaspora and not without internal tensions. By examining these practices, the article highlights how minoritized languages can be reconfigured through digital mediation, creating spaces for political expression and redefined forms of belonging. Further research could compare these dynamics with other postcolonial vernaculars to assess the broader implications of digital media for linguistic resistance.
