For much of modern historiography, the dominant paradigm—shaped by 19th-century positivism—has treated history as an objective science rooted in documents and freed, at least theoretically, from bias and interpretation. This vision, championed by Leopold von Ranke and institutionalized in the documentary school, cast the historian as a neutral mirror reflecting what actually happened. However, this notion began to erode with the rise of the French Annales School, which introduced structural, economic, and psychological dimensions to historical inquiry and emphasized the longue durée over isolated events. Amid these transformations, American thinker Hayden White proposed a more radical rethinking of historical writing. For White, history is not a transparent narrative of events but a constructed discourse shaped by linguistic, ideological, and poetic choices. He advanced a tropological approach, analyzing historical discourse through four interwoven levels: plot structure, rhetorical mode, explanatory logic, and ideological orientation. In this view, meaning in history is not discovered but produced within narrative form. This paper explores White’s redefinition of historical narrative, situates it between positivist and structuralist traditions, and assesses its potential impact on Arab historical studies. It argues that embracing White’s insight could enable a shift from merely chronicling events to interrogating the narrative frameworks that generate historical meaning.
