Protection Of Women's Rights In Algerian Legislation

Authors : Yahiaoui Salah .

Abstract

Algerian women, like the rest of the Algerian people, suffered greatly during the French colonial period. They fought alongside men, demonstrating remarkable bravery in the struggle for freedom. Their aspirations were realized with the attainment of independence. However, a new struggle began immediately after—one for securing their rights and freedoms within a modern society. As in other conservative societies, Algerian society remained attached to its principles and way of life, which imposed certain restrictions on women's freedoms and rights. This was reflected in the country's constitutions and internal legislation. Consequently, Algerian women entered a new phase of struggle to repeal some legal provisions they perceived as unjust. However, they found themselves caught between two opposing currents—one advocating for the abolition of these laws and the other striving to maintain them as acquired rights.
