The Geopolitical Representation Of Russia In The American Press And The Threat To The Wilsonian Order

Abstract

This study examines the geopolitical representation of Russia in American mainstream press through the lens of critical popular geopolitics, with particular focus on how Wilsonian ideals shape media narratives. Through a framing analysis of The New York Times article "The Making of Vladimir Putin," the research demonstrates how American media constructs Russia as a threat to the liberal international order. The analysis reveals that media discourse employs various framing techniques: establishing historical continuity with the Cold War, emphasizing Putin's KGB background, constructing binary oppositions between democratic West and autocratic Russia, and personalizing geopolitical threat through Putin's figure. American press consistently portrays Russia as antagonistic to Western democratic values while overlooking complex geopolitical realities and legitimate security concerns. تدرس هذه الدراسة التمثيل الجيوسياسي لروسيا في الصحافة الأمريكية الرئيسية من خلال منظور الجيوسياسية الشعبية النقدية، مع تركيز خاص على كيفية تشكيل المُثل الويلسونية للسرديات الإعلامية. من خلال تحليل تأطير مقال نيويورك تايمز "صناعة فلاديمير بوتين"، يوضح البحث كيف تصوّر وسائل الإعلام الأمريكية روسيا كتهديد للنظام الدولي الليبرالي. يكشف التحليل أن الخطاب الإعلامي يوظف تقنيات تأطير متنوعة: تأسيس الاستمرارية التاريخية مع الحرب الباردة، والتأكيد على خلفية بوتين في جهاز الاستخبارات الروسي (كي جي بي)، وبناء تناقضات ثنائية بين الغرب الديمقراطي وروسيا الاستبدادية، وإضفاء الطابع الشخصي على التهديد الجيوسياسي من خلال شخصية بوتين. تصور الصحافة الأمريكية باستمرار روسيا كمعادية للقيم الديمقراطية الغربية مع تجاهل الحقائق الجيوسياسية المعقدة والمخاوف الأمنية المشروعة
