The Concept Of Marriage In Jane Austen's Emma And Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre: A Comparative Study

Authors : Lecheheb Mustapha .

Abstract

In this article, the work was categorized into two primary sections. The first section is a comparison between Emma and Jane. The second contained the themes of both novels. I cited some feminist quotes for applying the principle of letting women defend themselves. In Emma, I explained the meaning of desire in marriage and the necessity of love. I answered the question that many social researchers ask. Why do women refuse the marriage offer from men? Because of the unromantic proposal, the lack of love and emotion toward men, and the fear of men’s commitment. On the other hand, in Jane Eyre's novel, Jane's social status is unequal when Mr Rochester asks her to marry him. Concerning the effect of religion on Jane’s marriage, I showed that Jane has successfully balanced her soul and heart. The issue of prohibiting divorce in that period impeded remarrying another woman. Despite the madness of Bertha Mason, Mr. Rochester could not divorce her. In this part, I mentioned the law change through the parliament. I also highlighted how Jane's inheritance upon her uncle's death allowed her to deal with Mr. Rochester as an independent lady. Finally, I discussed the advantages of women being economically autonomous.
