Embodiment In Metaphor And Imagery: A Comparative Analysis Of Aristotle’s Mimesis And Cognitive Semantics

Authors : Abbas Zafar .

Abstract

This article explores the creation of poetic meaning from two distinct perspectives. It focuses on comparing the Aristotelian theory of mimesis with the theory of cognitive mimesis to emphasize the differences in their mechanisms. We began with two examples: embodied metaphor and imagination, and concluded by tracing the evolution of meaning in poetic theory. This progression led to the integration of various topics, making poetic meaning relevant to a wide range of disciplines, including criticism, rhetoric, poetics, and cognitive neuroscience. Cognitive poetics has examined the image through models based on induction, generalization, and implicature, interpreting its acceptance through imagination. This approach is grounded in embodiment and explores the relationship between images and everyday
