Throughout Islamic history, encounters with political and religious adversaries were not solely defined by conflict. Equally significant were the moments of dialogue, debate, and negotiation. One prominent form of such interaction emerged through religious disputation—a field deeply embedded in the Qur'anic ethos of engaging the “other” with wisdom, gentleness, and respect for differing beliefs. This form of debate is rooted in the higher purposes of the Qur'anic message, such as enjoining what is right, using wisdom and the best manner of argument, and abstaining from insulting what others worship, so as not to provoke reciprocal blasphemy against God out of ignorance. Beyond religious dialogue, diplomacy offered another critical avenue for Muslim-Christian interaction. Whether negotiating peace treaties, arranging prisoner releases, or discussing tributes to avoid warfare, these diplomatic missions demanded a nuanced grasp of the opponent’s religious, social, and political frameworks. This required not only deep knowledge of Islamic law and theology, but also a studied familiarity with the sources, customs, and doctrines of the other side. In this context, the mission of Abu Bakr al-Baqillani to the Byzantine Empire stands as a landmark moment in the history of religious diplomacy. Sent by the Buyid ruler ‘Adud al-Dawla, al-Baqillani’s role extended beyond traditional negotiation: he was charged with engaging the Byzantine court and its religious elite in high-level theological disputation. His intellectual performance before the emperor and Christian clergy illustrates the role of religious argumentation as a tool of both diplomacy and cultural assertion. This study explores the intersections between religious debate, political strategy, and the treatment of prisoners in the medieval Islamic-Byzantine context. By tracing the historical threads of al-Baqillani’s embassy and examining the available records of his disputation, it seeks to shed light on the broader implications of religious diplomacy in shaping intercultural perceptions and policies. Future research—especially that which incorporates Byzantine and non-Muslim sources—remains essential for a fuller understanding of this complex and multifaceted historical episode.
