Islam and Arabs in Italia Policies in East Africa; A Documentary Study on the Content of the Colonial Populist Discourse (1896-1945) Dr. Ammar Abaker Mohamed Idris Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary History Faculty of Arts and Humanities University of Gezira- Sudan Abstract; This study discusses the Italian colonial populist discourse towards Islam and Arabs how it influenced the expansion of Italian influence and the imposition of colonial control over strategic areas overlooking the Red Sea and the countries of the Horn of Africa. The study focuses on the effectiveness of the populist discourse in appealing to the emotions of Islamic groups across their diverse ethnic components to support Italian colonial policies in the region. It seeks to answer the question; to what extant did colonial populist discourse succeed in stirring the religions and national sentiments of Muslims, gaining their support for Italian policies, and inciting them to commit hostile acts against the beliefs, ethnicities, and sects that opposed the Italian colonial project in the Horn of Africa?. The study is based on the hypothesis that there is a strong correlation between the success of the emotional and religious populist political discourse and the Italians ability to achieve their colonial ambitions in the Horn of Africa. The findings of the study reveal that the content of the Italian populist political discourse found a fertile environment among Islamic groups of various sectarian and ethnic components, successfully mobilizing them to serve Italian colonial agendas in Eritrea, Somalia, and Ethiopia.
