ABSTRACT This study aims to shed light on a key instrument that French colonialism used to serve their interests in Algeria, namely the printed press, which was employed to defend their projects and whitewash their image in Algeria and in the eye of the international community. The paper focuses on the demonstrations of May 8, 1945, which were carried out by Algerians, with the hope of obtaining their sovereignty according to French promises as a reward for the great sacrifices they made in World War II. Contrary to expectations, the response of the colonial authority and their militias was brutal and barbaric, as they committed massacres that claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Algerians. Algeria-based French newspapers played the role of the colonialists’ mouthpiece, as they held Algerians accountable for the results and consequences of these tragic events, and went as far as to accuse them of criminality, bloodlust, fanaticism and backwardness, forgetting the brutality and arrogance of the occupation. These newspapers continued to play the role of the lawyer of colonialism, Europeans and the occupying authority, which was clearly evident in their portrayal of said events, Algerians and the settlers. It displayed a clear bias towards the settlers, abandoning the ethics of journalism, which is to publish news, enlighten public opinion with facts, and adhere to neutrality and objectivity.
