The current catastrophic levels of food insecurity in Yemen and the threat of famine are the direct consequences of more than a decade of war. These alarming levels are compounding Yemen's pre-existing food security problem, due to the deterioration of the private and public sectors, the non-payment of salaries, the loss of livelihoods, and people's inability to purchase what is available in the market. This has led to the suffering of more than 20 million Yemenis who fall below the crisis level of the food insecurity index. Yemen has become one of the largest food emergencies in the world, according to the Famine Early Warning Systems Network. Aid agencies and non-governmental organizations have played a crucial role in mitigating the food crisis in many Yemeni governorates. However, security restrictions on aid access, due to armed groups, ground fighting, and airstrikes, as well as other factors, are delaying aid delivery and undermining humanitarian work in Yemen. However, these organizations, both international and national, have provided access to emergency food aid, healthcare services, and safe drinking water for millions of Yemenis.
