The Algerian pharmaceutical industry plays a crucial role in improving financial access to medicines, particularly in the era of chronic diseases. The Algerian pharmaceutical market is the third largest in Africa. The state has undertaken a series of reforms to develop the pharmaceutical industry. A strategy that has enabled it to achieve 65% coverage of drug consumption, through domestic production in 2022. However, dependence on imports for other drugs persists. Despite these advances, a recent ONS survey on household consumption revealed that Algerians are spending more and more on healthcare, with significant disparities between rich and poor, hence the problem of social inequality in the face of disease.
