Unlike the followers of Karl Marx, John Steinbeck does not work up his novel, In Dubious Battle, to instigate the mob to revolt against the capitalists and he relates exploitation to different sources and not solely to the system. Steinbeck relates it to capitalism and at the same time, he relates it to laziness and the lack of individual hard work. Steinbeck also presents the strike as a violent social force. In this research paper, I employ the Marxist philosophy to show how Steinbeck used his novel to quell the idea of class struggle out of history.
