Abstract

Abstract I order to shed light on how discourse works socially with all the complexities it entails, we attempt to analyze the speeches of President, Vladimir Putin and Mr. Sergey Lavrov about the war in Ukraine. Our study draws on Van Dijk’s “social cognition”. This considers clues crucial for effective interaction in context‒ knowledge, ideology, power, domination, and politics‒ these accompany discursive exchanges. They differ from one social group to another under the close watch of socio-cultural institutions. We follow a qualitative design, adopting corpora for data gathering and quota sampling for the selection of the sources. We apply the tools of the socio-cognitive approach. The findings have revealed that social entities have developed their own perceptions of the world. These underpin socio-cultural as well as political institutions piloting discursive occurrences and demanding the activation of socially shared knowledge within the purview of power relations and ideology the Russian Elites impose.
