This study examines the use of the gendered pronoun ‘he’ in Master research proposals in Applied Linguistics. Thirty research proposals, written in the academic year 2019-2020, were selected as a sample for the study. A questionnaire was also administered to sixty one teachers of writing from eight Algerian higher education institutions. Data were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed, first for the presence of the generic pronoun in research proposals, and second to explore the writing teachers’ practices in teaching gendered language. The results show that there is a predominantly exclusive use of the masculine generic pronoun ‘he’, thus making writing purely masculine. The results of the questionnaire show that teachers of writing do not place importance on teaching the use of inclusive rather than exclusive language in their academic writing. In light of the results, the study calls for more gender inclusive language practices in the genre of research proposals, in particular, and in academic writing, in general.
