Competence occupies a predominant place in business leaders' discourse, describing individuals' ability to mobilize the resources needed to meet the challenges of a constantly changing environment. This article aims to understand the perception of competence among managers, focusing on whether they distinguish it from related concepts such as qualification, professionalism, and experience, as well as the criteria they use for evaluation. An exploratory approach was adopted using a questionnaire administered to managers from different sectors of Algerian companies. The results show that competence is perceived as a crucial element in organizational development. However, some managers still confuse it with other concepts. The study highlights that most companies in this survey still need formalized systems for assessing competence.
