Abstract: This research aims at highlighting the recipient’s role in text coherence. It concentrates on the importance of context in the activation of the process of receiving texts in order to discover its meaning and the writer/ speaker’s intention. We want also to explain how texts are received and interpreted from a cognitive view according to two studies. Brown and Yule’s study which focuses on the role of the memory and the social and cultural contexts to interpret texts, and Sperber and Wilson’s theory of text relevance through their book Relevance: communication and cognition where they emphasize on context and its cognitive impact. The study shows that the recipient makes the text’s coherence relying on the context and thus limits the number of the text’s interpretations. The context is related to the information stored in the memory and requires mental effort.
