Mary Hunter Austin’s The Land Of Little Rain: An Eco-affective Perception Of The Environment In The Age Of The Anthropocene

Authors : Mokrani Selma . Benabed Fella .

Abstract

This article invites an examination of Mary Hunter Austin’s biocentric approach to the desert in The Land of Little Rain, a non-fiction work that challenges anthropocentric views and reflects the author’s commitment to both ecological and cultural diversity. The article employs recent theoretical concepts such as the Anthropocene, deep ecology, ecofeminism, and affective ecocriticism to explore the representation of the environment beyond a crisis narrative, the affective responses it evokes, the bonds between humans and non-humans, and the eco-pedagogical import of this under-examined literary work.
