The Influence Of Cultural Change Upon Idiomatic Language In Algeria

Authors : Bennacer Souad .

Abstract

Cultural change is the outcome of introducing innovation, be it a new invention or a novel concept or idea, into society. Understandably, idiomatic language change following culture change may be unescapable since idioms constitute an integral facet of culture. The present paper aims at exploring the possible influence of culture change on idiomatic discourse in the Algerian context. Semi- structured interviews were conducted to elicit data from a sample group of 12 randomly selected high school pupils whose ages range from 17 to 20 years. Data were analysed thematically to serve the ends of the study. The study revealed that the nowadays idiomatic expressions used mainly by adolescents embody the newly acquired cultural characteristics such as the widespread use of digital technology, the faster-now-world and the current tiny-village-world.
