Television And The Devaluation Of Truth And Meaning In Don Delillo’s White Noise

Authors : Boulanouar Abdelkrim .

Abstract

Television transformed the postmodern world into an inauthentic experience guided by mediated images. In White Noise, Don DeLillo depicts a society governed by a device elevated to a state of deity that changed people’s perception of life and subverted their notions of truth and meaning. The purpose of this article is to explore how television destabilized people’s faith in knowledge and value leading them to reject any possibility of objective truth or intrinsic meaning. It demonstrates the controlling nature of the screen and how viewers saw their world gradually stripped of meaning with the constant counterfeit replications of reality.
