A Feminist Reading Of Oliver Goldsmith's Play "she Stoops To Conquer"

Authors : Emad Jalil Shahid Al-thabhawee .

Abstract

In his play She Stoops to Conquer, Goldsmith explores a range of themes, from gender roles to the power of social class. What makes it remarkable is that it has persisted for centuries, despite its outdated language and customs. It is a testament to Goldsmith's skill as a playwright and his ability to write timeless comedies. It is also an exploration of power dynamics in eighteenth-century British society. The play revolves around the classic comedy form, in which the protagonist is at the mercy of a series of comic misfortunes. Goldsmith's exploration of gender roles is fascinating. Although she is the female lead, Kate is not a victim of Marlowe's misguided advances. Instead, she is a strong, independent woman who is able to outshine the male characters. Goldsmith also delves into the concept of marriage, explaining that it is not always a desirable arrangement. The play has been subject to many interpretations over the years. It is seen as a reflection of the power dynamics of 18th-century British society, as well as a comedy of manners. It is also viewed as a feminist play, due to the strong female character it centers around. Overall, “She Stoops to Conquer” is a timeless classic that has stood the test of time.
