Abstract

The introduction of Islam to Sub-Saharan Africa (Bilad al-Sudan) was a significant milestone in African history from the first century AH/seventh century AD. Following its entry into North Africa and initial interactions with the Saharan Sanhaja tribes, Islam began spreading southward, primarily driven by trade, which served as a key mechanism connecting the north and south. This study explores the spread of Islam through the Maghreb and Western Sudanese regions to understand the relationship between religion and politics in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite the initial lack of favorable conditions, the Islamic experience in Bilad al-Sudan resulted in the region's prosperity and incorporation into the Islamic world. This strengthened the ties between the Maghrebis and Western Sudanese in various areas, initially focused on trade and goods exchange, and marked the beginning of a new era of cultural, social, and political relationships. Maghrebi scholars, jurists, and preachers, with the support of the trade and ruling authorities, played a crucial role in this process. Notably, rulers from both regions preserved the intertwining of religion and politics to maintain diplomatic relations and legitimize their policies.
