Since the final decade of the 20th century, a distinctive and undeniable trend has taken root within Western mainstream politics: the rise of the populist far right. Nowhere has this surge of populism been more disruptive than in the United Kingdom, a nation that had been perceived as immune to far-right parties and movements. This study empirically gauges the identitarian components employed by British populist parties, with a focus on the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) and the British National Party (BNP). To ascertain the qualification of these parties as populist, a two-pronged approach is adopted. Initially, a minimalist definition is embraced and subsequently operationalized. Next, both political parties are subjected to an elaborate measurement criterion, designed to discern the sufficiency of identity politics as a catalyst for their respective breakthrough.
