English is a stress-timed language, which means that stressed syllables are pronounced with more emphasis and regularity than unstressed syllables. This rhythmic pattern is fundamental to the natural flow and intelligibility of spoken English, yet it can be challenging for non-native speakers to master. In this study, we explore the use of a metronome as a tool for analyzing the stress-timing of English speech. By measuring the duration of stressed and unstressed syllables in spoken samples of a rhyme, we investigate the extent to which English language teachers follow a consistent rhythmic pattern. Our results show that while there is significant variation in the duration of syllables across different informants, there is a clear tendency towards stress-timing in their performance. Furthermore, we find that the use of a metronome can help learners of English to internalize the rhythmic patterns of the language and improve their overall fluency and comprehension. This study has implications for language teaching and learning, as well as for the broader understanding of the rhythmic structure of spoken language.
