The Concept Of Ugliness According To Ibn Dabbagh Al-qayrawani

Authors : Hachani Mohamed Redha .

Abstract

Abstract: Ibn al-Dabbagh believes that ugliness is incidental to existence and that beauty is essential. He emphasises that the absence of perfection leads to the absence of beauty and thus to the emergence of ugliness. Ibn al-Dabbagh believes that the most important obstacles preventing a being from achieving perfection, and thus beauty, are darkness, i.e. matter and its associated immoral qualities, indulgence in material desires, and the existence of these obstacles, which are false and illusory. Therefore, ugliness is also false, since true and authentic existence belongs to God alone, who is characterised by beauty, goodness and absolute truth. The idea of affirming these attributes in their perfection for the divine essence and realising them in it is the purpose of Islamic law, which is based on the sanctification and purification of the divine essence in its names, attributes, actions and everything related to it. If we say otherwise, that is, that ugliness exists and its existence is authentic, and that ugliness can be absolute ugliness, we would be attributing the attribute of ugliness to the divine essence, and God is far above what they describe, which confirms that our thinker did not formulate his theory of negative aesthetics: Ugliness on purely religious and moral grounds, but went beyond that and innovated by giving it an ontological basis related to the concept of essential existence: which is for the divine essence alone, and everything else is a false, non-essential existence destined for destruction.
