Research on African SMEs frequently treats the continent as a homogeneous entity, overlooking the influence of diverse national systems on firm performance. Our paper challenges this perspective by providing a comparative analysis of Algeria and Sub-Saharan Africa, drawing from 84 studies. We uncover two distinct behavioral patterns. Sub-Saharan firms cope with weak institutions through fast moves and digital finance—our Constraint-Agility Equilibrium Model (CAEM). Algerian firms, however, live under a State-Insulated Rent Infusion (SIRI) system. The Dialectical Decoupling Matrix (DDM) is utilized as an analytical tool to examine the relationship between macro-environmental constraints and internal micro-absorptive capacities.
