English Hegemony And Linguistic Justice In Algeria: Reconfiguring The Status Of National Languages

Authors : Raoud Nadjouia .

Abstract

The international power of English lies not only in its status as a lingua franca but also in its worldwide use in science, technology, finance, and diplomacy. This linguistic hegemony has led to its provision in the educational system of a good number of countries across the world, including Algeria, where English has been incorporated into the curriculum from junior (and, recently, from primary) school to university level since the 1960s. This paper examines how discourses about English language hegemony both within and outside the Algerian context are overshadowing the status of national languages, and in this context, in Algeria, where an already complex multilingual and polyglossic situation prevails. Through a critical analysis of the current situations, this article aims to present suggestions on how to contribute to a less problematic incorporation of English into the Algerian cultural landscape, seeking to reduce the risk of attrition and loss of Algeria’s native languages while fostering pride in national identity.
