The Algerian War (1954–1962) involved systemic colonial violence, including torture, mass killings, summary executions, forced displacements, and regroupment camps, all justified under the rhetoric of “pacification” and law-and-order operations. These practices formed the backbone of France’s counter-insurgency strategy. Despite this, the memory of such crimes remains largely confined to the Francophone world, constrained by ongoing denial and limited international circulation. This study argues that translation into English is essential for Algerian historians seeking to liberate and globalize this memory. Translation is not a neutral linguistic process but an ethical and political act, enabling testimonies, archives, and confessions to reach a wider audience. By facilitating international circulation, translation allows colonial violence to be recognized beyond France and Algeria, situating it within a global history of colonial crimes and anti-colonial struggles, and contributing to historiographical justice and collective remembrance.
