Since Aristotle’s Poetics up to the boundaries of contemporary theatre, the dramatic text has remained the barometer and the central axis around which the theatrical process revolves. This has led playwrights and critics alike to approach theatre primarily as a literary text, particularly since Aristotle excluded from his analysis everything related to spectacle, maintaining that tragedy can be examined in terms of its dramatic structure and aesthetic value through the text alone, without being transformed into a performance in which the text intersects with other theatrical components. This conception established the text as a central and fundamental element in the formation of theatrical discourse. Such a view has given rise to several aesthetic orientations that call for a radical break with the Aristotelian paradigm and advocate steering theatrical practice toward another horizon, one aimed at producing an aesthetic discourse characterized by the plurality and diversity of sources that shape theatrical expression. Among these orientations is postdramatic theatre, whose practitioners sought to break away from traditional narrative structures by engaging with the text from within theatrical language itself—that is, by treating it as one element among others. Accordingly, this research paper seeks to reactivate the concept of postdramatic theatre and to clarify its aesthetic and intellectual characteristics, with the aim of emphasizing that this aesthetic model does not represent a transcendence of drama, but rather a variation of its forms, or drama in its processes of becoming, transformation, and change.
