Abstract

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) practice has become a rampant traditional practice bedeviling the rural populace in the Nigerian nation. Nigeria is listed among the topmost cases of FGM in the world, and over 20 million women and girls in the country have been a victim at one time or the other. Cultural beliefs as peculiar to every society entail the way and manner of doing things, their values, identities, traditions, occupations, religious affinity, among others. Thus, this study explored the influence of cultural beliefs on acceptance of Okin and TNT F.M’s Ilera Wa radio messages on female genital mutilation (FGM) among female residents of Ilemona community in Kwara State. Moreover, the Social Norms Theory was used as theoretical justification, while in-depth phenomenological interviews were conducted with 15 participants who are female residents in Ilemona community. Using phenomenological method of data analysis, findings emerged. Findings from the analysis of interviews showed the residents attached great importance to their cultural beliefs, and that various cultures that are in line with their traditions, religions, occupations and social lives are given importance, while also attaching value to their health wellbeing, and as a result accept the various campaigns and advocacies on radio towards FGM abolition. Also, it was found that the FGM messages made available to them conformed to their cultural values, simplistic in nature and used indigenous language spoken by the community, while nature of FGM radio messages aired through Okin and TNT F.M stations revealed that the messages revolved around civilisation, implications and lack of professionalism as the major reason why FGM practices must be abolished. However, the study concluded that there exists a connection between cultural beliefs and radio messages on FGM acceptance among residents of Ilemona community, due to the importance they attach to their cultural values and identities. Thus, the study recommended that since the residents of the community accepts campaigns that are majorly inclined to their cultural values, government should endeavour to consider channels that are in line with the cultural beliefs of the rural populace in passing FGM and other health-related messages from time to time.
