Cryptocurrencies In Algeria

Abstract

Cryptocurrency is a new form of digital money that relies on blockchain technology and is characterized by decentralization, meaning it is not subject to the control of any central bank. In Algeria, dealing in cryptocurrencies has been explicitly and legally prohibited since the enactment of the Finance Act of 2018, with Article 117 of the Act criminalizing “the possession, purchase, sale, or use of what is known as virtual currency,” and the state considers it an illegal activity subject to penalties; despite this ban, Algeria has witnessed widespread clandestine trading in cryptocurrencies, particularly among young people and digital traders, via specialized platforms. Algeria has officially issued Law No. 25-10, which prohibits the issuance or trading of digital currencies and virtual assets, as part of the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing, a move that has caused a stir among Algerians and experts, who are divided on the issue.
