International Protection Of Water During Armed Conflicts

Authors : Elachaoui Ghazal .

Abstract

The legal protection provided by the rules of international humanitarian law (IHL) is the most clear and fundamental source for establishing the legal protection of water resources. It includes mandatory rules that cannot be violated, particularly with regard to water and water facilities, particularly during periods of armed conflict. Damaging them during military operations is considered a grave international violation that entails international responsibility. This is because the natural environment, in all its aspects, indirectly affects humans due to their connection to it and their survival thanks to it, just as it does to any other indispensable resource for the survival of civilians, particularly water resources
