The Problematic Relationship Between Religion And Politics In Spinoza’s Philosophy: Toward A State Based On Reason And Freedom

Authors : Harrat Soumaya .

Abstract

This article analyzes the relationship between religion and politics in Spinoza’s philosophy through the ontological foundations of the civil state. Nature is conceived as a rational system governed by necessity, and the state as an extension of universal reason balancing freedom and order. Separating religion from politics is not a denial of the sacred, but a rejection of clerical domination. True religion promotes virtue and justice, while the rational state protects freedom of conscience. Democracy is thus the most complete form of the state, ensuring equality, freedom of thought, and law as the expression of the general will.
