The Language Of Siege: Samih Al-qasim And The Poetic Imagination Of Trauma In Gaza

Authors : Masood Khaled .

Abstract

Poetry is a unique tool that allows people to go beyond documenting the history of a particular event and recovering the voices of those who have been silenced by history and the failure of grand narratives. The poetry of Samih al-Qasim allows him to testify to the conditions of the siege and to testify from them, raising his voice from the husks of the silence of Gaza. Postcolonial theory and the theories of trauma will be utilized in this study of al-Qasim’s poetic creation. The work of al-Qasim masterfully creates a sense of the continuity of rhythm within a language that is fragmented by the experience of the siege and the archiving of the memory of Palestine. Selected poems from All Faces but Mine by Samih al-Qasim will be studied to demonstrate how al-Qasim transforms the siege into survival strategies, the void into the presence of metaphorical imagery, and silence into lines of poetry. Even past the mourning in his work, al-Qasim provides Gaza with a voice when all borders are closed down. In this mix of trauma and testimony embedded in al-Qasim’s work is an archive of the culture of the people of Palestine, from the private to the public, the personal to the collective, and the metaphysical to the political. In these poems is the story of the lessons of the human spirit and the capacity for resilience in the face of siege.
