Abstract: This study examines a particular type of the stylistic phenomenon described as “connected in wording yet separate in meaning,” namely the attribution of speech to its speaker. This is one of the disciplines of Qur’anic studies mentioned by both al-Suyūṭī and al-Zarkashī. The phenomenon of what is “connected in wording yet separate in meaning” is not limited to attributing speech to its speaker; rather, it also includes resumption introduced by the particle *wāw*, ellipsis, exception, and other related devices. It is a useful category that helps in analyzing meaning and in resolving exegetical problems. For example, the verse: *“She said, ‘Indeed, kings, when they enter a town, ruin it and render the most honored of its people humbled; and thus do they do’”* [al-Naml 27:34] admits of two possible interpretations: Is the phrase *“and thus do they do”* a continuation of the same context, and hence still part of the speech of the Queen of Sheba? Or is it a fresh, independent clause from Allah, Most High, confirming her statement? Each of these two possibilities carries its own connected meaning. The Qur’anic exegesis of Ibn ʿAṭiyya was chosen as the main field of investigation because he paid particular attention to this phenomenon in its broad sense, and his work contains meanings and justifications that are worth close examination. This is not unique to Ibn ʿAṭiyya, however; there is also a vast amount of relevant material in the works of others, such as Imām al-Ṭabarī, al-Qurṭubī, and, among contemporary scholars, al-Ṭāhir ibn ʿĀshūr. One of the aims of this study is therefore to draw researchers’ attention to these resources. The study concludes that this phenomenon is of great importance for arriving at the intended meaning, since it intersects with several areas: contextual analysis, the study of connection and separation (waṣl and faṣl), pause and resumption (waqf and ibtidāʾ), rhetorical and thematic correlations (munāsabāt), *iltifāt* (grammatical and pronoun shifts), and the formulation of certain exegetical principles. This type of analysis is also a means of multiplying meanings despite the fewness of words—one of the most prominent characteristics of Qur’anic style and one of the aspects of its inimitability.
