Authors : Olanike Olaleru1 Olugbodi Mariam3 .

Abstract

Abstract The art of greeting, which is a symbol of socialisation, is an important aspect of the Yoruba culture. This practice varies across gender, social class and age groups. Yoruba people, attach much importance to the art of greeting so much that there are cultural principles which support this art. This paper examines the proverbial perspectives on greeting in the Yoruba culture and the impact of globalisation on this aspect of popular culture. Through the lens of the Critical Cultural Theory (CCT) and the notions of Georgeiva (2014), fourteen (n= 14) purposively selected Yoruba proverbs were analysed verify the contributions of the culture of the Yoruba people towards ensuring a peaceful co-existence, national cooperation and promotion of these aspects of popular culture. Essential deductions from the study were that even though Yoruba proverbs represent the traditional constitution of the Yoruba speech communities, the trend in globalisation has led to the emergence of anti-proverbial sayings. The teachings of anti-proverbial sayings have marred the moral values of the society, which proverbs advocate. In conclusion, even though globalisation has an adverse implication on cultural ethics and practices, the promotion of cultural linguistic heritages such as proverbs, among the emerging generation by means of classroom instruction and entertainment, will foster the maintenance of the Nigerian cultural heritages and values.
