University Autonomy As A Forecast Of Graduate Employability In Public Universities Of North Central Nigeria.

Authors : Ngafi Emmanuel .

Abstract

Graduate employability is a burning policy issue in Nigeria since graduates of institutions of higher learning often face massive challenges in the process of seeking gainful employment. Although labour-market dynamics are undoubtedly likely to influence the outcomes of graduates, the governance system adopted in universities (especially the degree of autonomy) is crucial in determining whether the institution can redesign, distribute resources appropriately, improve quality of staffing and implement strategies that are likely to promote employability. The current study aimed at determining the predictive ability of different aspects of university autonomy as far as graduate employability in public universities within North Central Nigeria were concerned. The design of the correlational survey was used, with 394 modern graduates participating in the study by a structured questionnaire with high levels of reliability (Cronbachs alpha =.91). Descriptive statistics outlined the variation of variables, whereas the analysis of simple and multiple regression assessed the hypothesis of the study at the traditional .05 level of significance. The results showed that there were favourable ratings in academic autonomy (M = 3.423), financial autonomy (M = 3.352), administrative autonomy (M = 3.401) and staffing autonomy (M = 3.394). Employability of graduates was also rated to be high (M = 3.363). The outcome of the regression analysis showed that all the dimensions of autonomy were significant predictors of graduate employability, but staffing autonomy was the most powerful predictor (R 2 =.413, p=.005). All the dimensions of autonomy explained 50.9 percentage of the outcome cloud of graduate employability (R 2 =.509, p <.005). The research arrives at a conclusion that university autonomy is a strategy of strategic governance to improve the employability outcomes, and advice to strengthen the staffing autonomy, financial autonomy and programme responsiveness in the Nigerian public universities.
