Kazuo Ishiguro’s eight novel Klara and the Sun explores the constructed nature of empathy, agency and personhood through the portrayal of an Artificial Friend (AF) and a social robot called Klara interacting with people directly. This article studied the novel under the lens of posthumanist theory, reflecting on how it challenges anthropocentric premises by destabilizing the traditional binaries such as human/non-human or machines. Through Klara’s narrative, Ishiguro highlights the different forms of changes that could take place in the near future, and suggests that readers should re-evaluate the human subject, and ponder on posthuman values, addressing the technological entanglement, the ethical interrogation and the existential implications of the human/machines interaction.
