Abstract: The Westernization movement in Afghanistan does not have a long history. Its beginnings appeared during the reign of Habibullah Khan and then intensified during the reign of King Amanullah Khan, who sought to modernize the country through social and cultural reforms inspired by Western models. These included changing traditional dress, reducing the role of scholars, and expanding women's education. Although the king intended to establish a modern and advanced state, these events were met with widespread rejection by the conservative Afghan people, who viewed these changes as a blatant assault on Afghan identity and Islamic teachings. This popular rejection led to tribal revolts and popular uprisings against the state, culminating in the king's deposition and subsequent flight to other countries. This article, adopting a descriptive and analytical approach, examines the extent of the impact of Westernization on the Afghan people and how the Afghan people responded to this movement. It demonstrates that Afghan society is a people committed to religious values and has never resisted genuine renewal and reform. Rather, it has been irritated by Westernization and hollow, illusory modernization. It argues that any attempt at Westernization without regard for the unique characteristics of the Afghan people is doomed to failure.
