This study adopts a semiotic-pragmatic perspective to analyze respect and politeness in a comparison between Algeria and Italy, focusing on greetings, forms of address, and thanking routines. These routines are interpreted as social signs that regulate relational dynamics, status, and distance in intercultural communication. The findings indicate that in Algeria more ritualized and expanded sequences prevail, supported by a plurilingual repertoire and code-switching as a pragmatic resource. In Italy, especially in institutional settings, politeness tends to be more economical and is conveyed through stable markers of formal distance. The discussion highlights potential misunderstandings and practical implications for educational and professional contexts.
