محمد الأخضر السائحي شاعرا مسرحيا “mohamed Lakhdar Al-saïhi As A Theatrical Poet

Summary: Sahli is considered as one of the poets of the second renaissance in Algeria. Although he was far from Mohammed Al-Eid and Moufdi Zakaria, he managed to surpass many of his contemporaries. This was largely due to his long creative career and his engagement with official institutions, which opened wide horizons for his creativity and refined his poetic talent within the framework of the reformist movement. He remained faithful to his intellectual and aesthetic vision throughout his poetic experience. His works ranged between traditional (classical) poetry, the short poem, children’s poetry, and poetic theater. Sahli presented three texts, two of which take the form of operas: “The Story of a Revolution” and “I Am Algeria”, both written in 1964. The third text is a poetic play entitled “The Shepherd”, published in the collection “Whispers and Cries” in 1984, although it dates back to 1955. In this article, I analyzed these works and shed light on the two operas texts as well. I focused particularly on “The Shepherd”, highlighting its most prominent aspects, especially the element of conflict, which appears strongly in the text. I then examined the dialogue—its forms and functions. However, it seems that the level of conflict did not significantly contribute to the construction of the narrative, as Sahli appears to be more of a poet than a dramatist. I also examined rhythm in the play, focusing on meter and rhyme. Sahli was known as a supporter of classical poetry. The article concludes with a parallel reading of the text and an analysis of its two components: stage directions and instructions, as well as the main functions they perform.
