African Literature: A Victim of the "Western Complex": Arab comparative studies have largely ignored African literature, only recently turning their attention to it. This limited attention reflects a clear neglect on the part of Arab researchers. It seems that Arab comparative studies have not yet overcome the cultural "Western complex," a complex that pervades Arab intellectual and social attitudes toward the West, characterized by a sense of fascination. For a long time, the comparison of Arabic literature with Western literature dominated the research of Arab scholars, despite initial efforts to compare Arabic literature with Eastern, specifically Persian, literature. Within this one-sided approach, Arab researchers rarely, if ever, turned their attention to African literature. Arab African researchers—especially those from Egypt—focused on the literature of the North, neglecting, or rather ignoring, the literature of the South/Africa. This neglect reflects a degree of condescension. Neither geographical proximity, shared cultural heritage, nor historical roots can compensate for this injustice or neglect. In fact, these very similarities may contribute to the aversion and reluctance to compare African and Arab literature.
