Assimilation In Connected Speech: Challenges, Causes And Strategies In English

Authors : Saoudi Nesrine . Boukhedimi Yasmine .

Abstract

Assimilation is a key phonological process that could contribute to natural fluency in spoken English. However, perceiving assimilation in connected speech might cause challenges for Algerian English as Foreign Language (EFL) students, particularly when trying to identify familiar words in rapid speech. The present study attempts to explore particular difficulties that first-year EFL students can face in perceiving assimilation, the underlying causes, and possible strategies used to overcome these challenges. A mixed-methods design was adopted, employing a semi-structured questionnaire and a cloze dictation test. The findings from the quantitative data revealed that participants struggle with lexical segmentation, particularly with regressive assimilation across word boundaries. Furthermore, it revealed that the main contributing factors include limited awareness of assimilation rules, first language transfer, and a lack of exposure to the English language. Despite these obstacles, participants reported using strategies such as increased exposure to authentic input, phonetic training, and shadowing to improve their perception skills. The study aimed to highlight the importance of raising EFL students’ consciousness of the importance of assimilation, considering the impact of their first language and the need for targeted instruction explicitly designed to improve their ability to perceive and decode assimilated sounds.
